'Dev. D' sub-plot taps MMS sex scandal
The famous MMS scandal of 2004 involving the two school-going teenagers is used as a sub-plot by Anurag Kashyap in his film Dev. D the contemporary version of historic novel ‘Devdas’.
Kalki Koechlin , the newbie who is Chandramukhi in the movie, gets to play the character based on that young girl.
According to the official site, the movie has character named Leni who is a rich spoilt girl with hyperactive hormones. And after getting involved in MMS sex scandal, she is abandoned by her family and becomes a recluse. Later on she meets a pimp, Chunni. Leni is a college student by day and becomes Chanda a high profile call-girl by night.
The MMS scandal is sensibly tackled in the movie. In fact, Anurag himself went to meet that girl, who moved out of India after that much-hyped, atrocious MMS scandal. There are similarities between Leni/Chanda and that MMS girl. Kalki’s character is sex-driven, butterfly-kind of female who gets enmeshed in MMS trap. And this one incident changes her life. The only difference is that Leni is left by her family, while that girl was sent abroad.
‘Dev. D’, the modern-day Devdas, revolves around three characters, Dev played by Abhay Deol who is a drug-addict, Paro is played by debutante Mahi Gill and Chanda is portrayed by French girl Kalki. Dev and Paro remain the same but Chandramukhi is not a courtesan, instead she is a call-girl.
